William Basinski – Cascade

When it comes to American ambient composers, 57 year old New Yorker William Basinski is in his own stratum. This track “Cascade” has so many layers, endlessly peeling and reforming in a span of about 12 seconds that it takes all four and a half minutes of this excerpt to decipher what’s happening in the loop, but that’s not really his point. As with many of his works, Basinski uses the layers to establish an emotional vocabulary not attainable by a linear piece. He does have larger and better tracks and I implore you to check out his other pieces, but this is a nice place to start and a quick listen will give you a taste of what Basinski is about and why his elusive title and career have remained in the shadows.
