Demdike Stare – Hardnoise

This 10 1/2 minute drone piece is the kind of rhythmic composition that both intrigues and begs for repeat listens. The track gives a sense of dystopian tension, as if the first half is someone saying: “Keep your head down, try to blend in, I am a foreigner, and an outsider”. It’s not until the end do we feel a sense of hope and freedom from this oppression. Certainly the beat itself is simple enough, but how it’s articulated is what gives it its re-listen-ability. It doesn’t reach a true groove until halfway through the track, but it’s all about the ambiguity in the lead up. Spending so much time in contemplation makes the moments on the mountain peak more valuable.
